Simple Ingredients and Substitutes

Best Beef Seasoning Recipe - Talking Meals (2)

Nothing fancy here! These are all ingredients that you can find in the grocery store.

  • Kosher salt – If you don’t have kosher salt, you can use any coarse salt or sea salt. Table salt will also work. If you want to add the salt to your food separately, you can leave the salt out of the seasoning. Just make sure you add it for steak, as the meat really needs salt to help it caramelize and bring out the flavors.
  • Black pepper – Ground black pepper is always good with steak. You can use pre-ground black pepper or whole peppercorns that you grind in a pepper mill, food processor, or spice grinder.
  • Garlic powder – I like having all of the seasoning in the same size/texture. Ground or powder will blend more evenly. However, you could substitute in garlic flakes.
  • Onion powder – Same as with the garlic powder, you can substitute with onion flakes.
  • Smoked paprika – Smoked paprika is great on steak to bring in that smokey flavor. You can substitute with sweet paprika or chili powder.
  • Ground Coriander – Ground coriander is a traditional spice in Brazil. If you do not have it, you can use ground cumin.
  • Mustard powder – Mustard powder brings a subtle tang and rounds all the seasoning blend. If you don’t have it, you can simply leave it out.

Making this Beef Seasoning Recipe

Well, this is truly an easy recipe; there is nothing to it. Just measure the ingredients into a small and mix. You can make a little bit or a lot. You can make it in a big batch and give it as gifts for special occasions.

How to Use this Beef Seasoning Recipe

There are so many ways to use this seasoning – and not just with beef!

But, let’s start with beef.

You can season any good steak or cut of beef with this blend. Some of my favorites are flank steak, strip steak, skirt steak, or filet mignon. Just season steak and sear in a hot pan or on the grill or under the broiler and the steak tastes unbelievable. Or use it on a beef roast for amazing flavor. You can use as a dry rub or mix with olive oil and a little water to make a marinade.

You can also add it to other recipes, such as Potato and Steak Bites for cooking in a skillet. For grilling, kabobs are delicious for adding this seasoning, so check out my Quick Garlic Steak Kabobs with Creamy Cilantro Sauce. And for flank steak, try my Grilled Flank Steak Salad Recipe with Basil Dressing or this Flank Steak, Broccoli, and Potatoes Sheet Pan Dinner.

Try this seasoning on Chicken to give it big flavor!

I love to add it to Roasted Chicken Rice Dinner for extra flavor. It also tastes great on chicken that gets shredded for various recipes, such as in my Creamy Chicken Potato Soup Recipe or my White Sauce Chicken Pasta Recipe. My favorite way to use it is with ground chicken in Ground Chicken Meatloaf without Breadcrumbs or this Skillet Ground Chicken Tomato Sauce with Ricotta.

And of course you can add this seasoning to Vegetables!

I love to use it on Grilled Cauliflower Steaks or on roasted Roasted Carrots with Cumin and Avocado Crema. It’s delicious on french fries or roasted potato wedges. I also love to mix it into breadcrumbs for my Parmesan Zucchini Chips and my Baked Breaded Cauliflower Recipe {with Sriracha Mayo Dipping Sauce}!

Beef Seasoning Variations

You can take this base recipe and use it to make several other variations too!

  • Spicy – add a little or a lot of chili pepper flakes or cayenne pepper to the mix for some heat.
  • Italian – add dried oregano and dried basil to this mix for an Italian seasoning blend. You may want to eliminate the paprika as that can take you in a different flavor direction.
  • Indian – add curry powder or ground ginger to the mix to take it in an Indian flavor direction.
  • Mexican – add some chili powder and ground cumin to the mix and use it for ground beef tacos.
  • Middle Eastern – Try ground cloves or pinch of cinnamon and ground ginger for warmer spice.

Have fun with it and make your own spice blends!

Storage

Dry spices can last for years in the pantry if sealed in airtight containers. However, they do start to loose their fresh flavor after a year. You can store them in the freezer to keep them fresher for longer. That said, you are going to use this on everything, so you probably don’t need to worry about it!!

If you like making seasoning blends or having clear containers for seasonings, then check out these empty spice jars! If you want to make this in bulk, you can use a mason jar. Make as much seasoning as you want!
