Hundreds nominated for LEF Teacher Awards: Is your teacher on the list? (1)

Lafayette Parish teachers found out this week that they were nominated for Lafayette Education Foundation Teacher Awards with surprise"pinnings" by staff from the school system, United Way of Acadiana and LEF.

Hundreds of public and private school educators from across the parish were nominated by a parent, student or community member, and a committee will whittle that pool down to 16 finalists over four categories— elementary, middle school, high school and "Inspirational."

"A nomination is so meaningful because it comes directly from the people I'm trying to serve—my students, their families, and fellow educators," Carencro Heights Elementary teacher Shannon Crumlish said."I'm very grateful to whoever took their time to write and send in my nomination letter."

Finalists will be honored during a virtual2021 LEF Teacher Awards ceremony on May 18.LEF is partnering withUnited Way of Acadiana and theLove Our Schools community initiative to host the event.

"Being nominated made me feel that my students appreciated all the work that has gone into teaching during these difficult times," said Cathy Walz, who teaches Honors chemistry at St. Thomas More Catholic High School. "Validation couldn't have come at abetter time."

A top finalist for each category will be named during the ceremony next month.

In the meantime,United Way of Acadiana is hosting a "Rockstar Photo Contest" on its Facebook page to celebratenominated teachers and schools. People can vote on the photos from April 23-30, and the school photo with the most "likes"will win a $250 prize.
