아리아나 그란데의 "Eternal Sunshine 앨범"이 발매됐다. 앨범을 들어 보니, "Yes, And?"를 왜 리드 싱글로 발매했는지 바로 알 수 밖에 없었다. 싱글 홍보에 적합해 보이는 분위기와 사운드를 가진 수록곡이 이번 앨범에는 많지 않기 때문. 그리고 아리아나 그란데의 팬들은 이번 앨범을 좋아할 수도 있겠지만, 나에게는 너무 지루하다. 앨범 수록곡들 중에 내 취향을 저격한 노래는 "Bye" 정도인데, "Bye"도 "Eternal Sunshine 앨범"의 다른 수록곡 대비 좋은 편이지, 내가 좋아하는 아리아나 그란데의 다른 노래들과 비교하면 그냥 그렇다. 당장 유튜브로 "Eternal Sunshine 앨범"을 연달아 듣다가 추천곡으로 뜬 "Breathin"과 "God Is a Woman"을 들으니까 귀가 확 트이는 느낌이었다. 내가 느린 템포의 노래를 안 좋아하는 것도 아닌데, "Eternal Sunshine 앨범"의 수록곡들 대부분은 많이 아쉽다. 그리고 나만 그렇겠지만, "Eternal Sunshine 앨범"을 듣다보면 뜬금없이 PinkPantheress의 "Ophelia"가 떠오르는데, 정작 "Ophelia" 보다 좋은 노래도 "Eternal Sunshine 앨범"에는 거의 없다. PinkPantheress를 아리아나 그란데 때문에 재평가하게 될 줄이야...

한편 "Eternal Sunshine 앨범"은 아리아나 그란데의 팬들의 취향을 최우선으로 감안해서 만든 것 같다. 그래서 대중성은 떨어질 수도 있겠지만, "Eternal Sunshine 앨범"은 결국에는 괜찮은 성과를 거둘 수도 있다. 당장 대중성은 거의 없다시피한 라나 델 레이만 봐도 팬들이 라나 델 레이의 음악을 꾸준히 스밍을 해서 스밍에서는 괄목한만한 성과를 거두고 있으니까...

- 라디오차트에서는 무려 7위를 달리고 있는 중이다. 이 정도면 페이올라에 쓴 돈이 장난 아닐 것 같은 두아 리파다. 리드 싱글을 히트시키고 싶었으면 히트 가능성이 높은 노래를 리드 싱글로 내던가 하지... 딱 들어도 히트 할 것 같지 않은 "Houdini"를 왜 리드 싱글로 냈는지 도무지 이해가 안 된다.

3월 6일에는 왜 하는지 모르겠는 빌보드의 행사='2024 Women in Music',이 열렸다. 그리고 이번 '2024 Women in Music'에서 'Powerhouse Award'를 수상하게 된 Charli XCX의 빌보드 인터뷰 기사를 봤다가 Charli XCX가 너무 난해한 주장을 해서 황당했다. Charli XCX의 난해한 주장 그대로 FOOT 해석하면 "나는 대중 음악계에 꽤 큰 영향력을 발휘해 오고 있다고 생각한다. 거짓말이 아니다(=I think I’ve had a pretty big impact on popular music; I won’t lie)".

음악적 영향력을 논하는데 있어 히트곡이 반드시 필요한 건 아니지만, Charli XCX는 히트곡도 많지 않은데다가 2022년에는 대놓고 히트를 노리고 프로모션도 꽤 많이 했던 "Crash 앨범"은 앨범 타이틀 마냥 Crash(*추락 사고, 항공기가 추락하다) 같은 폭망 성과를 기록했다. 그렇다고 Charli XCX가 송라이터나 프로듀서로 활동해서 압도적인 성공을 거둔 것도 아니다. 그래서 (I’ve had라고 했으니까) 오랜 기간 대중 음악에 꽤 큰 영향력을 발휘했다는 Charli XCX의 주장은 미친 개소리 같다.

​공연 영상은 유튜브에 다 업로드 됐다. 그리고 내 음악 취향에는 '2024년 그래미 어워드' 보다는 '2024년 Brit Awards'의 공연들이 훨씬 나았다. 스테이지랑 조명도 훨씬 좋았던 것 같고... 인상적인 공연들은...

- 두아 리파 : "Training Season" *공중까지 활용한 퍼포먼스가 인상적이었다. 그리고 라이브와 퍼포 실력 모두 정말 좋았다. '노력했구나, 성장했구나',라는 말이 절로 나왔을 정도다.

- 켈빈 해리스와 엘리 굴딩 : "Miracle" *엘리 굴딩은 수영복 의상은 별로였는데, 생각보다 라이브가 안정적이었다. 삑사리 내지 않을까 했는데... 그리고 댄서들이 발광하듯 춤 추는 파트는 원곡에는 없는 파트인데, 새로워진 파트도 정말 좋았다.

- Tate McRae : "Greedy" *입고 나온 의상들이 에러... 청바지(?)는 별로였고, 상반신 자랑을 해대는 상의도 별로. 하지만 퍼포먼스는 정말 좋았다.

- 카일리 미노그 : "Padam Padam" / "Can't Get You Out of My Head" / "Love at First Sight" / "All the Lovers" *"Padam Padam" 초반부는 약간 뻘줌했는데, 그래도 공연장 분위기는 금방 달아올랐다. 굉장히 높은 장치 위에서 공연을 시작했는데, 약간 위험해 보였다. 4곡 모두 다 좋아하는 노래라서 정말 볼만했던 공연이었다. 그리고 "All the Lovers"를 부를 때는 왠지 모르게 뭉클하기도 했다.

_▶▶▶ "Escapism"과 "Prada"로 큰 인기를 누린 RAYE가 6개 부분을 수상했다. 기사 보면 RAYE는 'Brit Awards' 역사상 단일 년도에 가장 많이 수상한 뮤지션이 되었다. 기존 기록은 단일 년도에 4번 수상한 1995년 블러, 2016년 아델, 2023년 해리 스타일스가 가지고 있었다. 또한 "Songwriter of the Year"를 수상한 최초의 여성 뮤지션이 되기도 한 RAYE다.

그런데 RAYE의 수상 성공은 딱히 공감되지 않는다. "Escapism"과 "Prada"가 큰 인기를 누리기는 했지만, "My 21st Century Blues 앨범"이 정말 안 팔렸거든. 이 와중에 빌보드의 관련 기사는 'RAYE is not yet in their league as a global superstar'라고 말 하며 RAYE는 영국 밖에서는 아직은 인기 없다는 걸 확인 사살하기도 했다. 암튼 영국은 제시 제이(Jessie J), 에밀리 산데(Emeli Sande), 제스 글린(Jess Glynne)처럼 앨범 한 두 장으로 큰 인기를 누렸지만, 인기를 오래 유지 못 하는 뮤지션들이 너무 많아서, RAYE는 오래 갔으면 좋겠다.

​^♬♬♬ 모건 월렌은 7월 4일에 영국 런던의 'Hyde Park'에서 공연 확정됐다. 'Hyde Park'는 6.5만명을 수용할 수 있는 대형 공연장이라서 모건 월렌이 매진 시킬 수 있는지 궁금하다. 모건 월렌 뿐만 아니라 컨트리 뮤지션들의 영국 인기는 별로 같아서 매진은 힘들수도 있을 것 같은데, 2023년에 모건 월렌은 런던의 O2 Arena에서의 공연을 매진 시켰다. 이때는 2만장의 티켓을 팔아 치운 것 같다.

​^♬♬♬ 드레이크는 작년부터 콘서트 투어="It's All a Blur Tour"를 진행 중이다. 그리고 드레이크는 관객들 중 몇 명에게 명품 가방 같은 비싼 선물을 꾸준히 주고 있다. 그런데 올해 들어서는 관객들을 더 통 크게 챙기고 있는 드레이크다.

일단 3월 2일 콘서트에서는 "엄마가 죽었는데, 우리가 갚기 힘들 정도로 엄청난 주택 대출을 우리에게 남겼다. 도와달라"라고 쓴 편지를 관객 한 명이 무대로 던졌다. 그리고 드레이크는 이걸 봤고, 빚을 다 갚아주겠다고 했다. 드레이크는 금액을 정확히 밝히지 않았지만, 기사에는 'six-figure debt'이라고 나왔다. 드레이크는 최소 10만 달러 이상을 이 관객에게 주기로 한 셈이다.

^♬♬♬ 최근 저스틴 팀버레이크는 "Drown"에 대해 "굉장히 빨리 쓴 노래다. Lou Bell과 Cirkut과 함께 처음 쓴 노래다. 굉장히 빨리 썼다. 그래서 짜증도 났다. 왜냐하면 이렇게 빨리 만드는 노래가 나오면 "오, 힘들게 만들지 않은 노래는 아마 가치가 없을 거야",라는 생각을 하게 되기 때문이다. 하지만 "Drown"을 다시 들으면 들을수록, 이 노래를 더 많은 사람들에게 들려줄수록, "이 노래는 너 다운 스타일의 노래처럼 들려"라는 생각이 들었다. 이런 익숙함 혹은 사람들에게 인기를 끄는 능력을 과소평가하게 된 노래들을 생각해보니까 "Mirrors" 때문이었다. "Mirrors"는 거의 5년 동안 작업했다(*오래 작업한 "Mirrors"가 잘 되서 빨리 쓴 노래들은 별로일 가능성이 높다는 생각을 하게 됐다는 의미 같다). 그리고 정식 발매된 "Drown"의 보컬은 데모 버전의 보컬이었다. 이 노래를 쓸 때 나는 한 줄씩 녹음했다. 우리가 이 노래를 많이 들을수록 데모 버전의 보컬이 더 솔직하게 느껴졌다. 그래서 나는 아무것도 바꾸고 싶지 않았다",라고 말 했다.

​문제는 다른 글에도 썼듯 "Drown"은 내 취향의 노래이긴 하지만, 저스틴 팀버레이크의 과거 히트곡="Cry Me a River"가 떠올라서, 신선하지도 않고, "Cry Me a River"를 재탕한 것 처럼 느껴진다는 것. 하지만 이번에 저스틴 팀버레이크가 말 하는 거 보면 저스틴 팀버레이크는 "Drown"을 꽤 고평가하는 것 같다. 그래서 "Drown"이 망한다면 심리적으로 타격 좀 받을 것 같은 저스틴 팀버레이크다.

It kind of annoyed me, because sometimes you have this thing like, ‘Oh, if you didn’t struggle to write the song, maybe it’s not worth it.'” He continued, “The more I listened back to it and the more I played it for people, the more it was like, ‘No, this sounds like you.’ When I think back to songs like that, where I kind of underestimated that ability to have that familiarity or catch on with people, the last time was ‘Mirrors.’ I sat on that song for, like, five years.” Timberlake added another “fun fact” to the mix, sharing, “The vocal that you hear is the demo vocal. I recorded it line by line as we were writing it, just to demo it out. The most we listened back to it, the more it had this honesty to it that I didn’t want to change anything.”)
