Do youbuy some things at the grocery store that you know you could make yourself for cheaper, but you can’t resist the convenience? I am definitely guilty of this. My biggest money wasters are bagged salads. I know I can get bunches or spinach leaves or hearts of romaine lettuce and wash and cut them myself, but I can never resist being able to just pour salad right into the bowl. What are some of your favorite convenience items?
Pizza sauce used to be another thing I would buy at the grocery store without thinking anything about it. It was actually my pickiness that inspired me to try making my own, not my desire to save money. Most jarred pizza sauces are a bit sweet, and I don’t like that one bit. I want my sauce to be strong and tangy, so I set out to create the flavor I wanted myself.

As it turns out, pizza sauce is really easy to make as you will see in this recipe! The only thing I had to buy for this recipe was a can of tomato paste, and everything else was already in my kitchen. There is almost always one brand of tomato paste on sale for around 50 cents a can, which is way less of an investment than a $4 jar of pizza sauce that will likely be too sweet anyway.
This is my go-to pizza sauce recipe for dishes like Skinny Stromboli or Pizza Sliders. I hope it will become a favorite at your house too!

Thanks Andi, this is a keeper…..I do not like the sauces you buy in the store either…..and the pizza sauce is the worst :) This sounds great, looking forward to making it….
Now would you have a CHICKEN FRIED RICE recipe ? One that you have made and your family loves it…..I have tried so many and just can not find one that is fit to make….I
think whom ever came up with this recipe is NOT giving us the true recipe…..because
the ones I buy at a Chinese restaurant taste nothing like the recipes I have tried…..if
you don’t, maybe one of your bloggers may have a great one….I would love to have the recipe….
Thanks,
Andi

Hi! I’m glad you like this recipe, and I hope you get a chance to try it. Chicken fried rice is actually on my list of recipes to make soon, and I’ll try to get it ready for next week or the week after. I have friends with beef or vegetarian fried rice if you want me to send you those recipes. I’m sure there are some other great ones out there too! Thanks for your comment :)

You’re so right about spending extra money on things just out of convenience when they really are simple to make at home (I’m especially bad about the bagged lettuce). This is such a money saver and so quick! I always have tomato paste in the kitchen, so I need to try this. :)

Hi, Marcie! I also spend too much on pre-diced butternut squash because it is just so much easier than cutting my own. I’m sure it would taste better if I bought a whole squash though. Thanks for stopping by!
Now that I think about it, you are absolutely right! Sauce is usually way too sweet!! I guess that’s why I was never a huge fan of loads of sauce that I get from the store! You’re so smart! :)
This recipe looks incredibly simple and super quick! Bonus … I’ve usually already got tomato paste on hand for when I make tomato-based soups! Can’t wait to make it!

I lived with my dad in Ohio for a while when I was a kid, and the pizza sauce was really sweet up there! I had never had anything like it, but I guess some people like it that way. I hope you like this version, Gretchen!

Geez, why didn’t I think of that. I am always looking for something to smear on flat bread mini pizzas or even sandwiches to make the ‘goo’. I should have connected the dots from A to B to C. I loved those books when I was kid. Do they even have those anymore. Probably all on line. Sigh. My age is showing.
Bottom line—-this way too easy and way too obvious. Apparently you can teach an old dog new tricks.
